Choose Your Boat Anchor

Apr 10 2012

Select the Right Anchor

There are several different types of anchors. Nevertheless, there are certain very important attributes you should keep in mind when selecting an anchor. Will it set quickly, and hold in a variety of different bottom types? Can it withstand significant loads? Is it easy to deploy and retrieve, and is it easy to store?

An anchor is a significant piece of safety equipment. Look for quality construction features such as heavy duty components, strong materials, strong welds, and quality galvanizing. You should have at least one heavy anchor for each type of bottom you expect to anchor on. Actually, you should have more than one depending on the bottom conditions, and you will need two (bow and stern) in tight anchorages.

There are essentially three categories of anchor. First, there are those with deep penetrating, lightweight, pivoting flukes such as the Danforth or the Fortress. These anchors are reported to have the greatest holding power per pound of any style of anchor. Second, there are the plow-style anchors such as the Bruce, Delta, CQR, Spade and Max. These have excellent structural strength, but do not penetrate as deeply into the seabed as fluke-style anchors. On the other hand, they tend to set more easily due to increased weight. Finally, there are specialty anchors for specific bottom types. Variations on all of these traditional designs exist, and new ones seem to pop up all the time.

No single anchor design is best in all conditions. Thus, a critical consideration when selecting an anchor will be the bottom conditions in the areas you want to visit. In fact, empirical studies suggest that the selection of a suitable bottom for anchoring is a much more critical factor than the design of the anchor.

Sand is relatively easy for anchors to penetrate. Most anchors will hold best in hard sand. The Danforth and Fortress anchors work very well in sand. Mud, on the other hand, has low sheer strength, and requires an anchor with a wider shank-fluke angle and greater fluke area so that the anchor will penetrate deep to where the mud has greater sheer strength. Mud is frequently thin and layered over some other material. Thus, anchors that can penetrate through the mud to the underlying material will hold better. Fortress anchors work very well in mud, because they can be converted to a broad fluke angle.

Rock and coral bottoms present different challenges. Here, holding power is more dependent on where you happen to drop the anchor, than on the type of anchor you have. Plow-shaped or grapnel-type anchors generally work best. These include the Bruce, CQR, Delta, or Yachtsman. Shale, clay and grassy bottoms present tough challenges for all anchor designs. Here, it is the weight of the anchor, more than its design, that is the most important factor. CQR, Delta anchors, and Yachtsman anchors are able to penetrate the vegetation. However, be careful of a “false-set” as it is possible the anchor has caught on roots or other protrusions rather than something solid.

Now that I have an anchor, what do I attach it to?

Anchor rode on pleasure boats generally consists of three strand nylon line with a short length of galvanized chain. Nylon is used because it stretches thus reducing the load on your anchor. Chain is used between the anchor and the nylon line for abrasion resistance, and to keep the pull on the anchor shank more parallel to the seabed. Experts recommend that the amount of chain be equal to at least one-half to one full boat length, and of a diameter equal to one half that of the nylon line. Some boaters prefer an all chain rode as it reduces the need for scope, and, due to its weight, it lies easily on the bottom.

Setting the Hook

The best anchorage offers a good holding bottom, suitable depth, and protection from wind, waves and passing craft. Setting your anchor properly is critical to holding your boat in place. Follow these steps to anchor your boat:

1. Select an area of little current, protected from the weather, preferably with a flat bottom. The area should be well upwind of where you want the boat to end up. Make your approach slowly into the wind or current. Look at other boats in the anchorage and follow their lead in using either a single anchor or bow-and-stern anchors. Determine where their anchors lie so you will not foul them, and select a position that will allow you to swing with the wind or current without bumping into other boats.

2. Prepare Your Crew. Nothing marks a novice as much as yelling orders at your crew, and a briefing beforehand will let your crew know what you expect of them, as well as help you to sort out the anchoring procedure in your own mind. Keep a pair of work gloves aboard to protect their hands from the rode and chain, as well as from mud or seaweed that may come up with the anchor.

3. Be Quiet. Because it is often hard to hear over wind and engine noise, I use hand signals to let my crew know what I want. To start lowering the anchor, I use a thumbs down signal. To stop paying out the rode, I clench my fist. For the crew to let me know the anchor rode is securely cleated, they clasp their hands above their head. To raise the anchor, I use a thumbs up.

4. Be Courteous. If you are not sure how a nearby boat is anchored or where their anchor lies, cruise past and ask them. It’s much better to find out now, before you have to re-anchor in another location.

5. Don’t Splash. Never throw the anchor over the bow: it is a sure way to both tangle your anchor and mark yourself as an amateur. And be sure that the boat has stopped all forward motion before lowering the anchor, or you could tangle your propeller.

6. When at the spot, stop the boat, and check that the boat will be free to swing in all directions. Slowly lower the anchor over the bow to the bottom, and then slowly back the boat away, downwind or down current.

7. Once the hook is on the seabed, put your engine in reverse until you feel the hook dig in. Back up steadily, paying out anchor rode until you reach the predetermined scope. Let out about seven to ten times as much line as the depth of the water, depending on the wind strength and wave size. Scope is the ratio of the amount of anchor line paid out to water depth plus freeboard. Anchors hold best when the pull on the anchor is parallel to the bottom. More line paid out also increases shock absorption by the anchor line. Anchoring experts recommend 7:1 scope when possible. Using a larger anchor or more chain to lower the angle of pull will compensate for shorter scope.

8. Tie off the line around a bow cleat, and pull on the anchor to make sure it is secure. After anchoring, check your position with local landmarks. While at anchor, recheck these landmarks periodically to make sure you aren’t moving. Most GPS units have an alarm that will alert you if the boat moves. Be sure to use it if you are going to sleep aboard at anchor.

9. Periodically check connecting knots on your anchor line. When possible, use splices instead of knots. Knots weaken a line more than splices Remember, when anchoring overnight, you must turn on an anchor light. Also, never anchor or otherwise obstruct passage through channels or areas such as lauching ramps or any other high traffic areas.

Follow these guidelines when retrieving your anchor:

1. Always retrieve your anchor into the boat before leaving the area.

2. To retrieve the anchor, move the boat over the anchor while pulling in the line. Pulling the anchor straight up should break it free. If the anchor is stuck, turn your boat in a circle while under power.

3. When the anchor breaks loose, stop the boat, and retrieve the anchor. Never drag the anchor behind the boat.

A Few Extra Reminders

Wind determines the overall force on an anchoring system. Larger boats present greater resistance to wind, which in turn causes a heavier pull on the anchor and rode. Sizing anchors based upon conservative wind velocities is foolish because you cannot run out and buy the next size up when the wind starts blowing hard. It is recommended that you size your anchor to withstand heavy weather.

Make sure you inspect your entire anchor system frequently for chafe, loose shackles, and bent flukes. The system is only as reliable as its weakest component.

Store at least one anchor so that it can always be used immediately. Even the strongest anchor will not do you any good if you cannot deploy it. Quickly deploying even a small anchor can keep you from going aground.

Be aware that the boat will swing down wind or current from the anchor. Allow “swing room” for any change in wind or current!

Since anchoring can be an emergency procedure, store the anchor and its lines in an accessible area. Use the anchor immediately to avoid drifting aground if the engine breaks down.

Anchoring is one of the most important skills to master if you plan to cruise from one area to another. Since there is rarely any need to rush, use the same slow, cautious approach to anchoring that you use when docking. With a little preparation and practice, you’ll be the one enjoying the pina colada in the cockpit watching others as they anchor.

How to Tie a anchor line Hitch

Apr 08 2012

cleat3

The cleat hitch is a special knot used to secure a line (rope) to a cleat. Almost all boats have cleats at the bow (to which an anchor line or forward dock line is tied) and at the stern (to which a dinghy tow line or aft dock line is tied). Cleats are also used on many boats to secure jibsheets or other running lines. Learn how to tie a cleat hitch for use in these situations
If a line is not correctly secured on the cleat using a cleat hitch, it can work itself loose. Learn to do it the right way and soon you’ll be able to do it in your sleep.
Although cleats come in many sizes and shapes, most standard cleats have two “horns” around which the line is tied. The one shown here is a dock cleat used for tying up a boat.
Here’s the right way to tie a cleat hitch:
First, bring the line under load past the center of the cleat on the outside, and wrap it around under both horns.Bring the line across and back under the first horn again in a figure-eight. Then make another figure-eight loop around the second horn.
It is crucial that to pass the loose end of the line, called the bitter end, under itself as shown. This way, an increasing strain on the line will pull the knot tighter rather than loosening it.
Tips for Using a Cleat Hitch
For extra security and to prevent accidentally loosening the hitch, wrap the bitter end one full turn around the base of the cleat after completing step 3.
Tidy up any remaining loose line by coiling it and hanging it over the cleat or coiling it on the dock beside the cleat, to keep it out of the way.

Length of Lines

Any time you collection belay you had to have a sufficient amount of lines while in the liquid thus it creates some 45 degree approach from the fall down belay and also ribbon and bow of this cruiser. This is exactly “scope. lunch break The right breadth preserves the main tug over the belay tumbado as an alternative for oriented vertically. Generally if the cruiser paletot “up” over the belay to be able to decisions, it’d detachment the main belay above the bottom together with undo her right behind the knee. A very good suggestion to discover the best breadth is normally seven to ten paws about belay lines (known simply because rode) for ankle about liquid. The main hinges on environment illnesses, sturdiness within the ongoing together with environment.

Length of Band

The right belay rode closes which includes a a natural part of band. The main band when they get home offers additional excess fat to belay and enables handle it again downward. What’s more, it preserves spectacular lower part is awesome, or possibly blockages with mowing within the belay rode and perhaps shedding off your company’s belay. The main rule among bodybuilders meant for length of belay band is normally? ankle for ankle about cruiser part. For that reason some 22-foot cruiser preferences any 11-foot belay band.Height about Lines Each of those rode lines together with band consist of a lot of different sizes. The main height hinges on the duration of the sevyloyr fish hunter 360 usually in the process. You will find there’s minimal amount of significant difference from the thicknesses meant for sailboats versus potential, nevertheless significant aspect to consider is normally entire cruiser.

The suitable height planning changes lives relating to arranging the main belay, however will likely make a huge difference for flexibility. Some lines likewise brightness definitely will cause breaking within difficulty to a quite heavy yacht. Some 10-foot cruiser preferences a pair of handcuffs lines together with band 3/16″ coarse. Nonetheless , which will narrow lines would definitely cause breaking within difficulties to a 26-foot cruiser’s excess fat. Some 26-foot extensive cruiser about any form requires a lines at a minimum 3/8″ coarse, in addition to a? -inch coarse band.Belay Proportions Many anchors consist of several different sizes to put varied fishing boats, nevertheless 2 things to look at anytime planning belay proportions happen to be implement together with cruiser. How large is the sevyloyr fish hunter 360 situations relating to closing the perfect belay for it. Some 10-foot cruiser must some ideal excess fat belay rather than a 60-foot cruiser.

The importance of anchor line reel and choosing the right length

Apr 05 2012

boat-anchor-lineWhen it comes to boating then there are many things that are needed to be considered but the most important thing that you should keep in your mind is the use of right anchor chain. Many people take anchor line for granted but they forget that if they want to sail properly and safely then they will need this kind of thing with them. For example; if you are in the middle of the sea and you realize that you need to dock your boat here because there is no way for you to move ahead. What will you do if you don’t have anchor reel with you? Let us say that you have the anchor reel but what will you do if you don’t have enough anchor line reel? These are some of the questions that you should always ask yourself before you go out for boating.

How to determine the right length of anchor chain?

In order to make sure that you can anchor your boat properly, you should know the right length of anchor chain. This length can vary depending on the depth of water and some other factors. Below, we will be discussing how you can determine the right length of anchor lien reel to be used and how this right length can be helpful for you to anchor your boat in the right way?

There are three things that you should know in order to determine the right length of anchor chain.

  1. 1.       The distance from bow to the water surface

You should know about the distance that is present between the top level of your boat and the water surface. Usually, people don’t take this distance into consideration and as an end result; they end up throwing insufficient boat anchor line in the sea. You will get nothing if you throw insufficient anchor reel into the ocean. So, you need to know the actually length or scope that is required.

  1. 2.       The total depth of water

If you listen to weather forecast or you simply look at the navigation chart then you can get to know about the maximum depth of the water. Latest boats are equipped with the technology with the help of which you can get the actual measurement of water depth. This will make it easy for you to through the right length of anchor chain in the water. If you are using the right length of anchor line reel then anchor will actually touch the sea bed and keep your boat still.

  1. Maximum height of tide

You should also know about the maximum height of tide as well. On different days and at different times of the day, these tides can have different heights. However, weather forecast can tell you the maximum height that you can expect on a particular day. This height will also be added into the total length of anchor line reel.

Once you have information about all the above given factors, you can calculate the required length of anchor chain reel and anchor your boat properly.

anchor

If you have just bought a new boat for yourself and this is the same boat that you had always dreamed of then you need nothing else at the moment. All you need to do now is to get on to the boat and go for boating in the sea. But wait for a moment, you have just bought the boat not the anchor system right? Well, you need to buy the right anchoring system for your boat now but for this reason; you must know what kind of anchor line reel you will need. There are different types of boat anchor lines available in the market but unfortunately, not all of us have good information about these anchoring systems. In order to make sure that you buy the best anchor reel for your boat, you should read the remaining article.

The size of your boat (vessel) always plays and important role when you have to buy a boat anchor. If you have a small size boat then the size of anchor will also be small but if you have bought a big size boat for yourself then you will needing a boat anchor that is bigger in size. In some cases, you might need to use more than one anchor as well. However, we will discuss all these things in detail after a while.

First of all, let us talk about the importance of size and weight of the boat anchor. If the boat anchor is small in size then it doesn’t mean that it will be low in weight too. However, weight is usually visualized by looking at the size of the boat anchor and anchor chain’s length as well. As described above, for a small boat, you will need a small anchor and for a bigger boat, you will need a big anchor.

If you are not feeling comfortable about buying a bigger anchor for your boat then it would be better if you can use more than one anchor chains. There are two benefits that you can get by using more than one anchor. The first benefit that you will get is that, by using more than one anchor, you will be able to maintain the weight required for docking your boat properly and secondly it will be helpful in reducing the swinging circle of the boat too. If you throw only one anchor then your boat may stand still at one point but it will keep swinging although it may not drift. In such case, using more than one anchor line reels can be helpful as swinging angle can be reduced easily.

The type of boat anchor is very important. Not only that you need to pay attention towards the size and weight of anchor but you also need to pay attention towards the type of anchor required. It will totally depend on the place where you are going to anchor your boat. Some anchors and anchor lien reels work better on reef surface and some work better on sandy surface. You will have to make your choice keeping this information in your mind.

Tips for better boat anchoring and anchor chain

Apr 01 2012

If you know how to anchor your boat in the right way then not only that you will be able to save a lot of time but you will feel less stressed as well. The most important thing in safe boating is to know when and where to use your anchor chain for anchoring the boat. Keep in your mind that if you are boating in a safe manner then you are protecting your life but if you are not doing that then not only you are putting your life under risk but the life of anyone who is on board with you. So, below are some of the important anchoring tips that you should keep in your mind so that you can use anchor chain in a right way.

The first thing that you need to consider is whether your anchor line is always ready or not? If your anchor chain is not ready then it can take you a lot of time while trying to bring it out in rush. This can be dangerous. Every time you come back from the trip, you should wash the anchor chain properly and then coil it in such a way that it can be opened again easily. You should also observer the anchor line reel closely to see if it has been damaged from any side.

These anchors are either made of all chain or rope. In some cases, a combination of rope and chain is used in these anchors and anchor line reels. The importance of the anchor chain is that, it provides enough weight to the boat anchor so that it can reach to the bottom easily. This chain also acts as the shock absorber as well.

You should know about the weather condition on the day when you are boating. It will help you understand the amount of anchor chain that is needed to be released in order to make the anchor touch the sea bottom easily. On different days and in different seasons, the length of anchor reel required can be different. If depth is low then a scope of 3:1 will be best for you but if the depth is a little more than scope should be made 5:1 whereas, a scope of 8:1 is for the extreme depths.

When it comes to find the suitable place for anchoring the boat, you should know that for what condition your boat anchor is designed for? There are some anchors that are designed for reef areas and some other are designed for sandy bottoms. In general, it is always better to anchor you boat on a sand path because the boat anchor can dig easily in the sea bottom to provide safe docking of the boat.

Once you are ready to dock your boat, drop the anchor safely and slightly in the water by moving your boat in reverse condition. Make sure that your hands are clear when you throw the bottom in the sea. If you will not take precautionary measures, you can easily get injured while trying to dock your boat.

Boat anchor line and some basic things that you should know

Apr 01 2012

anchor line

anchor line

We all want to have our own boat for sailing but there is one thing that no one seems to learn and that is boat anchoring. It is just like if you learn how to drive a car but you don’t learn how to park it safely. Well, sailing on your own boat has its own thrill and fun but at the same time, you should also know how to dock your boat safely with the help of boat anchor line. Before you go ahead and learn how to use the anchoring system and anchor chain properly, there are some basic terms that are commonly used in the boating and you should know about them.

  • Vessel – A common term used for boat.
  • Ground Tackle – anchor chain, anchor line reel (sometimes this means anchoring the boat)
  • Rode – The technical name for anchor line or anchor chain
  • Scope – This means the length of the anchor rode. This is measured in water depth units.
  • Shackle – This is a “U” shaped connector having a bold or pin across its open end.
  • Bitter End – The last part of anchor line is called bitter end

Above described are some of the commonly used terms in boating world and if you don’t know any of those then you are considered an inexperienced person in this field. A person needs to know about these common terms so that not only that he can learn new things from other people but he can also teach from his knowledge to other as well.

Now will take a look at the common names of different designs of anchor chains or boat anchors:

There are different styles of anchors available. If you are a new boat then you can feel confused about it. Some of the common styles of boat anchors are: Grapnel, Fluke, Plow, Mushroom and Navy. There are some new anchors that are normally known by the name of manufactures like Fortress and Danforth.

If you want to learn how to anchor the boat properly then you will have to practice it by yourself. Anchoring the boat is perhaps the most important task and in fact the most difficult one as well. It doesn’t look as complicated as it really is. For a person looking from a distance, anchoring the boat is just like throwing the anchor in sea, making it touch the bottom and that’s it. However, it doesn’t work like this and you cannot expect it to work in this way as well. If you want to get most out of boat anchoring then you need to use the right type of boat anchor line. Once you have the right boat anchor line for your boat, you will need to learn how to use that anchor because just throwing the anchor in water and making it touch the sea bed is not sufficient for you. You need to know if the anchor has actually diged into the surface or not. You also need to make sure that it will come up easily as well.

Well, in real world, things happen in a different way and it would be a lot better for you if you can learn how to anchor the boat in right way. However, below you will find some useful information for buying a new boat anchor.

Size of your boat

The first thing that you need to consider the size of the boat that you have. The Importance Of Choosing The Right Boat Anchor

Mar 26 2012

If you want to talk about the right way of anchoring a boat then it means that you are also from one of those people who have very less knowledge about anchoring the boats or buying the right boat anchor. A person who is new to boating, might start thinking that how hard it can get? All you need to do is to throw the boat anchor in the water, wait until it hits the bottom of the seas and then tie it with the boat. Well, it may seem such simple but actually, it is not as simple as it looks like.

If you have experience in boating then you know that anchoring the boat in right way not only requires a lot of practice but you are supposed to use the right equipment for this purpose as well. If you are not using the right equipment and not applying the right technique, it means that you are getting yourself in trouble. A trouble in between the ocean is never a good thing. However, if you keep practicing then you can become good at anchoring the boat and learn how to use the boat anchor properly.

In the beginning, you need to select the right type of ground tackle for your boat. Ground tackle is the right technical term used for boat anchor, anchor line and anchor reel. If you think that one boat anchor line can do everything perfectly for you then you are wrong. Different anchors are designed to perform different functions. Each and every design of boat anchors performs best when you use it in right condition and it has its own benefits and drawbacks as well. So, a person needs to know how to use an anchor chain in order to get most out of it.

One of the commonly used anchor line is Danforth anchor that can be easily identified. It has two long shanksand two sharp pivoting shanks. If you have a small or a medium sized boat then Danforth can be the best choice for you. Its anchor is very light and it can be stored easily anywhere. It can dig very well into the sand as it touches the sea bottom to provide best results. It is not a difficult thing to pull it back as the technique for pulling this anchor line back is very simple.

Another type of anchor is called the CQR. It is also famous with the name of plow anchor. It has a single shaped fluked that is pivoting at the end of its shank. This design is also very useful for different sea bottoms. If you will pull the boat anchor line vertically, the anchor will come out of mud easily and you will be ready to move.

Another type of boat anchor commonly used is Bruce anchor that was not particularly designed for boat but for drilling sights under the sea. However, it works really well with the boats and that is the main reason why many experienced sailors use this anchor line reel in their boats.

The effective small boat anchoring systems

Mar 26 2012

If you are looking for solution with the help of which you can deploy or retrieve any anchoring system easily then you are actually looking for Boat anchor winches but you don’t know about it. These winches can be used either manually or automatically. The choice is yours that what kind of boat anchors system you want to use for your boat. Apart from boat anchoring winches, you need to have strong boat anchor and anchor reel to support your small boat. The good thing about a small boat is that, it doesn’t require a heavy boat anchor and the bad thing is that, with a little flow of wind, it can start drifting. Perhaps, a small boat faces more threat from sea tides and blowing wind. That is the main reason why a person should pay special attention towards the anchoring system of a small boat.

I own a small boat myself and I have personal experience with the anchoring system of these small boats. The owner of the small boat thinks that he doesn’t need a heavy boat anchor and goes into the sea with a small size anchor with him. Although, this small boat anchor combined with a strong anchor reel will do the job for you but in case of strong wind or huge sea tides, this will turn out to be an unsuccessful idea. That is the main reason why I always prefer to use strong and heavy boat anchor for the boat.

If you think that a 400lb anchor will be sufficient for your small boat then instead of carrying the 400lb boat anchor, take a 500lb boat anchor with you. This extra weight will help your boat to keep still and docked at the same place. If you will use a small or underweight boat anchor, it will not be able to hold the boat for a long time. Using an underweight anchor for boat is just like using not anchor and anchor reel at all. The anchor line needs to be strong because it has to hold the boat keep it from drifting away. If the boat anchor is not doing the trick for you and you are not able to get control over your boat while it is docked, it simply means that you are using an underweight boat anchor.

It would be great if you can take a professional suggestion or advice about anchoring system of small boats because it can be helpful for you to use a best anchor system for your small boat. If you don’t want to use a heavy anchor for your small fishing boat then it would be better if you can use at least two anchors so that if you find your boat drifting after throwing the first anchor, you can use the other anchor to make it still.

Small boats may not require a strong anchor line but it is really important to use a healthy and long anchor reel so that you can get better control over your boat.
